About the event
At The Communication Olympics, we believe that strong communication skills open doors to success. This event is designed to help children build confidence, creativity, and critical thinking through fun, interactive activities in public speaking, debate, creative writing, and teamwork.
Our event, is designed to teach children essential communication skills in a fun and engaging way. Led by nationally ranked debaters, award-winning public speakers, and experienced writers from Bergen County Academies, the #1 ranked school in NJ, this event features interactive activities focused on public speaking, creative writing, debate, and teamwork.
Instructors will be guiding students through three interactive stations, teaching them skills and tips for each focus area and how to stand out for competitive analysis. each focusing on a different aspect of communication:
🔹 Public Speaking Station: "Silly Speeches & Storytelling"
✔ Children will build confidence in speaking by engaging in fun, lighthearted impromptu speech exercises.
✔ They’ll pick a random topic (e.g., Why pizza is the best breakfast or How to train a dragon) and have 30 seconds to prepare and deliver a short, engaging speech.
✔ Interactive storytelling games will encourage creativity, quick thinking, and vocal expression.
🔹 Debate & Persuasion Station: "Mini Mock Trials"
✔ Students will work in teams to craft arguments for and against a fun, age-appropriate debate topic (e.g., Should students have three-day weekends?)
✔ With 5 minutes to prepare, they’ll learn how to structure arguments, use evidence, and respond to opposing viewpoints.
✔ This activity strengthens critical thinking, persuasive speaking, and teamwork—skills essential for leadership and academic success.
🔹 Creative Writing & Storytelling Station: "Express Yourself!"
✔ Kids will participate in engaging writing challenges such as "Finish the Story" or "Persuade Me", where they craft compelling short pieces.
✔ Through guided prompts and group exercises, they’ll develop a strong narrative voice and learn the power of effective storytelling.
✔ This station nurtures imagination, writing fluency, and the ability to organize thoughts clearly.
🔹 Non-Verbal & Team Communication: "Tower Talk Challenge"
✔ Students will learn the importance of body language, listening, and clear instructions through an interactive team-building game.
✔ One member of the team is blindfolded while others must guide them verbally to build the tallest tower using blocks or cups.
✔ This exercise improves cooperation, leadership, and non-verbal communication skills.
Beyond empowering students locally, this event supports a global mission: providing access to language learning subscriptions (like Duolingo) for underprivileged youth in Chennai, India. A transformative initiative in South India provides free, full-day education in English and technical skills to young adults from rural and underserved communities - many of whom have had minimal prior exposure to English. By helping fund access to high-quality language learning platforms, we’re equipping these students with the tools they need to succeed in global workplaces like Google and Amazon. Through your child’s participation, they’ll not only strengthen their own communication skills - but also directly contribute to making a impact and a difference for others across the world.
